2021 ROUND 2 BURDEKIN 300

The Burdekin 300 event was the second round of the 2021 Mickey Thompson ARB QLD Offroad Racing Championships, 1-2nd May 2021.

Thank you to Ryellen Heliwork and the Burdekin Offroaders Inc. for sponsoring and organising such a great event.

The long course track consisted of 35km of varied terrain; lush high speed straights, rocky climbs, quarry sections and long whoops, finishing off in a stadium motor cross style track complete with jumps, berms and tight cross back sections.

For the short track section- the 3km stadium track was seperated from the main track, and raced in a continuous circuit.

The prologue had us seeded in 21st position, the top of group 2, ensuring a clear dust free run.

Heat 1 consisted of 1x lap of the 35km long course, completed in 32:24.75- a huge 4:12.84 behind first place in 19th position.  This was new terrain for Black Betty, not having competed in a long course event before, and not having experienced whoops before either! About 5km from the finish, Betty developed a loud noise from the rear right wheel housing. She limped home where we found a bolt had loosened from the disc brake and was running the internals of the hub. Pit crew managed to repair the issue to get Betty back on the start line for heat 2.

She started to find her feet in heat two which consisted of 3x consecutive long course laps. Black Betty crossed the finish line in 1:33:05.73 minutes, knocking off 8 positions to sit 11th outright.

Heat three consisted of a 3x laps of the 3km short course track, completed in 14:44.91 - an awesome 5th outright.

Sunday session started with 3x continuous laps of the long course. Betty battled the dust in this section for most of the first 2x laps until she could make a pass and gain a clear view of the track. Despite being held up, Betty was the 5th car past the checked flag with a time of 1:30:40.81. With all the long course events behind us, we were over the moon with Betty's performance. No major mechanical issues. She was ready for her last heat of the event.

The final heat of the weekend came down to 2x laps of the short course. Betty flew through the stadium section, in 8:39.05. A euphoric experience for the whole Team.

Prize giving revealed the overall results: 2nd in class and 3rd outright position with complete racing time of 3:59:35.24!

Congratulations to all the competitors, especially to Brett Comiskey (1st position outright 3:43:31.67 ) and Kye Floyd (2nd position outright 3:44:52.14).
